Promenade Update: City Requests County Action Following Stor

Promenade Update: City Requests County Action Following Storm Damage

November 7, 2026 Update

The September 26 nor’easter caused significant damage to the Brigantine Promenade, including the destruction of two beach access ramps and damage to other structural components. The City has formally contacted Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson requesting a clear plan and timeline for inspecting the damage and moving forward with repairs.

The Promenade is owned by Atlantic County, which is also responsible for the recent restoration project. Several items identified by the City during a June 11 walkthrough with County officials remained unfinished before the storm.

The City's preliminary assessment identified several areas of storm damage, including:

  • Complete destruction of the recently replaced wooden beach access ramp at the north end and the concrete beach access ramp at 11th Street North.
  • Damage to the ocean-side railing and bulkhead cap.
  • Apparent settlement of the concrete walkway near 13th Street North.
  • Several light poles displaced from their foundations.
  • Damage to railing at the 10th Street North beach ramp and potential damage to the ocean-side timber sheet piles.

This is a preliminary visual assessment. A comprehensive inspection by County engineering professionals is needed to determine the full extent of the damage and evaluate the condition of the Promenade and bulkhead system.

The City Engineer has contacted County Engineering and offered to meet on-site to review the damage. The City has also submitted a preliminary damage estimate to Atlantic County's Office of Emergency Management.

In a November 4 letter, the City formally requested confirmation that the County had received the damage assessment and asked for information about its plans and timeline for a comprehensive inspection, immediate safety measures, storm-related repairs, restoration of the damaged beach access ramps, and completion of outstanding work from the recent restoration project.

As of the date of that letter, the City had not received a response outlining the County's plans or timeline.

The Promenade is more than a recreational walkway. It is also part of an important coastal protection system that helps protect Brigantine Avenue and surrounding County infrastructure.

The City will continue to press for answers and a clear plan from Atlantic County and will keep residents informed as more information becomes available.
